Breaking Dawn
Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight series, is nearly eight hundred pages long and has caused quite a bit of controversy due to the more adult tone and graphic scenes that it contains. Though a natural progression of the story, many parents have protested the book’s appropriateness for the preteen population that the series originally targeted. The book presents a very real look into human emotions and the complexity of relationships between people who are different.
The book begins a few days before Bella and Edward are due to get married and is initially presented from Bella’s point of view. Jacob is gone, having fled the area in his wolf form after learning about the engagement. At the wedding, he makes an impromptu visit and Bella is overjoyed. Unfortunately, they end up in a huge argument and Jacob has to be physically carried away by his pack brothers when he learns that Bella is planning to consummate her marriage while she is still human.
While on the honeymoon, Bella ends up pregnant and she and Edward rush back to Forks. Bella finds an unlikely ally in Rosalie, who helps her protect the unborn child. The story line throughout the pregnancy is extremely intense, and the relationship between Edward and Jacob evolves. Stephenie Meyer’s choice to tell this part of the story from Jacob’s perspective is intuitive and successful. Jacob is maturing emotionally as he adjusts to his feelings for Bella and struggles to become a good leader to his little pack.
This final book provides the answers that readers have been waiting for since Twilight. Bella is finally a vampire and Jacob finds love. Edward and Jacob resolve their differences and an uneasy truce is made with the Volturi. Stephenie Meyer does a wonderful job of tying the series together in this book, though the reader is still left wanting to know more. There is a fifth book called Midnight Sun that Ms. Meyer was writing but the draft was released via the internet without her approval. She has issued a statement that the book may never be released.
Eclipse was published by Atom, an imprint of Little, Brown Book Group, with ISBN 978-1-905654-28-4.
