Stephenie Meyer
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Stephenie Meyer was raised in Phoenix and met her husband Christiaan while she was living there. She married him in 1994 at the age of twenty-one and they proceeded to have three boys. She was a receptionist at a property company before writing the first book of the saga that would catapult her to fame.
Twilight was based on a dream that Stephenie had about the meadow scene that can be found in chapter 13 of the book. She wrote the entire book in three months and claims that she was writing strictly for her own enjoyment. When her sister read the book, she encouraged Stephenie to submit it for publication. She received nine rejections before the manuscript was accepted by Writer’s House.
Little, Brown and Company purchased the rights to publication of the book for $750,000 at auction, which included the rights to three books. The original print run of Twilight was only 75,000 copies in 2005 and the book shot straight to the top of the New York Times Bestseller List where it remained for nearly three months. In total, the book stayed on the list for nearly a year.
With the release of New Moon in 2006, Eclipse in 2007 and Breaking Dawn in 2008, Meyer has become a household name. She stated that the fourth book would be the final book written from Bella’s perspective and the the fifth book, Midnight Sun would be a book written from Edward’s perspective and used to clarify topics that could only be explained from his point of view. Unfortunately, the much-anticipated book’s rough draft was released via the internet without Stephenie’s permission, and she has since stated that she is not sure whether she will ever release the book.
Stephenie has developed a strong fan base and is extremely gracious. She claims that her Mormon faith tends to lend itself to her characters morally and philosophically and believes that her work will always be light because of who she is. Her books have sold over 100 million copies worldwide and are translated into more than twenty languages.
